We’re going to be doing some math review over the summer and one of the things I’m going to incorporate is videos. One of the math concepts we covered this year was time. Here are some telling time videos I’ve pulled together that I may use. I sorted them by the specific time concepts they cover and included a short description, along with suggested grade levels.
Parts of a Clock & Time Basics
(PreK-1) This cute video explains the difference between an analog and digital clock, as well as the jobs of the clock hands. This video would be great to use when first learning about clocks.
(K-1) This video does a great job explaining the different parts of a clock and how it works. It includes analog and digital clocks and even talks about the concept of “clockwise”.
(K-1) Cute, cute song that explains seconds, minutes, hours, and days.
(K-1) Another adorable Dr. TickTock video that explains A.M. and P.M.
Telling Time to the Hour
(PreK-K) Fun song from PBS’s Steve Songs about time to the hour and the hands of the clock. This would be great for those just learning about time.
(K-1) This catchy two minute song mainly focuses on time to the hour. There is one spot in the song that mentions a few other times, but I don’t think it would be too confusing.
Telling Time to the Hour and Half Hour
(K-1) If you haven’t seen any of Teacher Tipster‘s videos, then you’re missing out! He’s fabulous! In this video, he shares a short song/rhyme his uses to help his kids remember time to the hour and half hour. It also includes a rhyme to remember 15 and 45 minutes past the hour.
(K-1) A song that is mostly about time to the hour, but towards the end of the song it does go over half past the hour.
(K-1) This video covers time to the hour and half hour. The short explanation and practice are just enough for a quick introduction or review.
(K-1) This video offers a brief review of telling time to the hour before moving into teaching how to tell time to the half hour. It includes both analog and digital time. This video might be a good choice to be used in a math center to reinforce or review the concept.
Quarter Past, Quarter To
(1-2) This video relates quarter to and quarter past the hour to the fraction one-forth, which I think is how it should be done. It’s a short video at a little over a minute, but it explains the concept nicely.
(1-2) This video gives a good explanation of quarter past and quarter to an hour. It doesn’t mention that a quarter is one-fourth, which I think is important to connect to this concept.
Telling Time to the Nearest Five Minutes
(1-2) This is a 10 minute mini-lesson on how to tell time to the nearest five minutes. It also includes student practice. This video would be awesome to use with students who might need extra reinforcement with the concept or even those who might have been absent when you taught this lesson. This video and teacher are fantastic!
Telling Time to the Nearest Minute
(2-3) This video is wonderful! It does an amazing job of explaining how to figure out time to the nearest minute. It talks about how the minutes around the clock are basically just a number line from 0-59 that has been shaped into a circle. I have never thought of it that way! It goes on to explain why only 5 minute intervals are displayed and the rest of the minutes are represented with marks. This video would be great for students needing remedial help. I think even teachers could benefit from watching this before they teach the concept! (This is part one of a three part series. Here is part two and part three.)
